We Build Websites Assets For Our Clients
A good looking website will not enable significant business growth unless it has also been deliberately designed to attract visitors and generate enquiries. Instead, it becomes an expense, costing more money than it earns. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
With more and more people looking for local suppliers online, having a productive website is vital for local businesses. A productive website supports business growth by attracting visitors and turning them into customers. It earns more than it costs, becoming a valuable asset instead of an expense.

That Enables Business Growth?
Welcome to Spotlight Web Design
I started Spotlight Web Design because I’ve seen many business owners frustrated with the lack of results from their websites and I want to help change that.
In 2004, as a self-employed business coach, I started working with small business owners in Christchurch. Drawing from my corporate experience in sales, marketing and strategic planning I helped people develop business skills to get better results in the ‘people world’. At that time, the ‘online world’ was new to me, as it was to most business owners. Since then, I’ve upskilled myself to learn about designing business websites that actually work to help a business grow.
Getting a website designed is not difficult, there are many businesses that provide website design services. Once designed, it’s natural to assume the job is done as you view the good-looking website. But having a web presence is just the beginning. Unless the website is designed to attract visitors it will contribute little to helping your business grow.

Our name, Spotlight, reflects our focus on
- helping websites stand out from the crowd, so they get seen by more people
- promoting specific information on a website to help our clients achieve their goals
- guiding visitors around a website to easily find the information they need, creating a positive experience and encouraging more enquiries.

Good-Looking doesn't imply High-Performing
If you were looking to buy a stylish and powerful new car, the Audi TT S Coupe might catch your eye. It looks sleek, every detail designed to the nth degree for visual appeal.
And it looks powerful too. Lift the bonnet and you will see the powerful engine that makes this car a pleasure to drive.

But looks can be deceiving, especially when it comes to websites.
Not all good-looking websites have integrated high performing design that attracts visitors and generate enquiries.
Imagine if your good-looking Audi TT had a lawnmower engine lying under the bonnet. It would still look great, but it definitely would not meet your performance expectations!

For the average person, judging whether a website is designed to enable growth can be difficult. That’s why we show our clients what lies beneath the surface of their website, so they are confident it is being built to perform, as well as look good.

First We Plan
One lesson I’ve learned several times is the importance of planning, to make time to plan before taking action.
Action is critical to success but only if the actions are aligned with the goals you want to achieve. If there is no plan, urgency dominates and we can end up reacting to what’s happening around us instead of pursuing our goals.
That’s why we take time to step back and look at the big picture, to explore
- Website Purpose – what do you want it to achieve?
- Core Focus – what parts of your business do you want to promote most?
- Business Strategy – do you want your website to help initiate a change of direction?
- Competitive Strategy – what are you competitors doing online and where do you fit in?
- Business Strengths – What makes your business unique? Why buy from you?
“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe”.
Abraham Lincoln

Before beginning any website design, I make time to understand your business and website goals, and I provide you with insights into your customers and competitors online. This gives each of us a better understanding of the objectives and the current situation in the market, from which we create a plan to move forward.
It does take time to work through this planning phase (sharpening the axe) but it provides clarity and focus for developing an effective website that works to achieve your business goals.
